Outfit: Black and Gold

Last night I went out. I wore a dress that my mum made for me.

Please do ignore the awkward just-about-to-laugh-face. 

It's from the same pattern as the dress I wore in this post. I really love the cut of this dress. This is the pattern for those interested. The halter dress didn't work out very well - the bust is a very odd shape - but this version sits really well on me.

My friend, Kate (in the photos below), was encouraging me to get silly in the photos. This was the best I could do. V for Victory!

Kate often wears the sort of stuff I really love but don't want to wear myself.

Oh, and I tied ribbons to the straps of my shoes as these tend to slip off when I'm walking. It worked really well and looked cute, too!

Hope everyone has been having a lovely weekend! Aside from dancing the night away, last night, I've been doing my best to avoid the heat. Unfortunately all I want to do, right now, is knit but it really is too hot for that, in my opinion. Ah well!

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

In the past I have shared with you my hat collection and my camera collection...so, I thought I may as well share my shoe collection, as well.

Here's a shot of practically all of my shoes. I don't wear most of them very often but, as someone once told me, it's more difficult to find a pair of shoes for an outfit than the other way around so I'm holding on to most just in case. Most of these aren't vintage, either, as it's only somewhat recently I've started buying vintage shoes.

I decided I'd take individual shots of my small vintage shoe collection, though.

I bought these from etsy a while ago. I do love them but have yet found something they look perfect with. Thoughts?

Another etsy purchase that arrived just last week. Aren't they lovely? Exactly what I've been looking for.

Got these from a Salvos. They were selling them as 'tap shoes' which I knew, of course, they are not. They do have steel tips underneath the toes to keep them from wearing down but definitely not tap shoes!

I got these from my favourite Adelaide vintage store (Red Ruby Vintage) as a gift when I bought something else.

You've all seen these a few times before. My perfect white summer shoes that I thought I would never find. Also from etsy.

But I think these are my favourite vintage shoes, so far. They are absolutely perfect and exactly what I was looking for, for next winter. I'm really glad I took the gamble on them when I found them on, you guessed it, etsy.

Look at that detail. Swoon!

Buying vintage shoes online isn't quite as scary as I thought it would be. If the seller has the measurements correct (and a quick look at the feedback should tell you how reliable a seller is if you haven't bought from them before*) it's as simple as measuring some of your own shoes that fit well! I've not had a problem with shoes not fitting, yet.

*Sometimes a seller may have only one person (or a small number in comparison to the positive) who has left negative feedback - when that happens I tend to look at the feedback for the buyer and sometimes it turns out other sellers have actually had problems with them.

Checking Out Check

Please excuse the awful title (it was either that or "Ooh, 'eck, I love check") - I'll say it time and again but I do hate thinking of blog titles! I've started to realise that a lot of my favourite articles of clothing are done in check fabrics - I love check, I'm mad on plaid, etc.

My last two etsy dresses have both been somewhat check-ish, if not entirely check. Here's a couple of sneak peeks before you get to see me in them!

Miss Tami Lee of My Moving Finger Writes. I've admired this lady since I saw her posting at vintagehair on LJ.

And the very lovely Riikka of Harlean's Heyday. She has great style and great taste in practically everything, so it seems! 

I'm also very excited about another dress in a sort of check that starts with 'ging' and ends with 'ham' that I purchased just the other day but you shall all have to wait for more information on that one!

Blogger Spotlight {Sunny Buick}

I’m not entirely sure when I first saw Sunny Buick’s work but I’ve a strong feeling it was in an issue of Nude Magazine. I fell in love as soon as I saw both her tattoo/flash work as well as her paintings and illustrations, which are also heavily influenced by tattoo culture amongst many other things.

I don’t really know a lot about tattoos or tattoo culture and will admit that I don’t really know many artists but I know what I like and I love Sunny’s work.

But Sunny isn’t just an amazing artist – her creativity can be seen in her personal style, too.

I have a print of one of Sunny’s paintings above my bed – I actually won it from a giveaway on her blog, over a year ago. I'm sure I had a picture of it hanging on my wall but can't find it, right now. Oh well. This is the print I have.

You can see more of Sunny’s work on her Flickr stream as well as her blog. And you can buy prints of her work on etsy. I love looking at Sunny’s blog as she not only posts her work, but different things that she loves or inspire her, too, and I think it’s great to be able to see an artist’s inspiration.

I suppose this isn’t so much a ‘blogger spotlight’ as an ‘artist spotlight’ but as Sunny does have a blog, I’ve decided I will leave this under the ‘blogger spotlight’ heading (and save myself another tag, too).

Musical Interlude {Kitty, Daisy & Lewis}

The other day I mentioned that I went to see Kitty, Daisy & Lewis. I can’t remember exactly where or when I heard about them but I fell in love as soon as I saw one of their videos on YouTube.

These three young musicians, haling from the UK, are incredibly talented – they play a multitude of instruments, have fantastic singing voices and make some of the best music I’ve heard from contemporary rockabilly bands.

Plus, I hate to reduce everything to looks or aesthetics, but, seriously, look at how adorable they are! And stylish, too. I was so impressed that Lewis played the entire gig in a suit and tie on a fairly hot Adelaide summer night at a venue with rather poor cooling. I wasn’t even in the thick of the audience (I stood closer to the back) and I could barely stand the heat.

(Returning) Sponsor Spotlight {Lady K Loves}

As you can see the neckline is quite low so I plan to wear mine with a little lacy camisole underneath but it looks lovely as is, if you are a little more daring than myself.

For my southern hemisphere followers, Lady K even has some lovely swimsuits, which would look just as lovely lounging about if you’re not a fan of swimming.

Outfit(s): I Feel Pretty, etc.

On Wednesday night I went to see West Side Story at the Adelaide Festival Theatre, hence the title of this post. I had lots of things I wanted to say about it but now I can't think of any of them. Shame on me for not writing them down, sooner! My Twitter 'review' when I got home immediately after seeing it sums up how I felt after, though: 'Just saw West Side Story. V. good. I approve. Fantastic choreography & orchestra. I approve of fine figured men in fitted clothes too. ;)' I obviously take note of the most important parts of a theatrical production, no?

Upon watching it onstage, I was reminded that I've always been more interested in the story of the Jets and the Sharks than I am in Tony and Maria's (if I'm to be frank, slightly ridiculous) romance. Before I step on any toes I shan't say any more on that subject (the romance) but I will say that, as in the film, it was the Jets I found most impressive onstage as well as the young woman who plays Anita. (Another thing to note is that the Puerto Rican accents were only marginally worse than most in the film). All in all it was a most enjoyable evening and I got to wear a dress I've been longing to wear out again for quite some time, now. I've only worn this dress once before - you can see that outfit post here.

I love this comment on the YouTube page: If only teenagers nowadays burst out into glorious song whenever they felt misinterpreted by society...
