Supanova Day Two

Oh gosh - I nearly forgot to post the follow-up to my Supanova post! I've been so distracted doing one thing and another (hence the unimaginative title) that it almost slipped my mind. Well, here it is...I ended up wearing the same dress that I'd worn out the Friday night because I wasn't entirely happy with my second costume. It was lucky that I didn't wear it as I didn't stay as long on Sunday and I would have felt like I was cheating the costume (but at least I've got one for another time, once I finish it to my satisfaction.)

The dress was made using a vintage pattern that I bought because it reminded me a bit of the blue dress Ann Robinson wore in The War of the Worlds.

The bat was just tacked on - I think I'd like to get my name embroidered on it or cut out a nicer one before I attach it properly.

A couple of slight changes on Sunday - my hair, obviously, and I wore a different belt, which I think works a lot better than the one with the gold buckle.

I couldn't resist posing with my Batgirl Pullip, Betty, (though I realised too late I was covering my own bat up with her...)

Wonder Woman (my friend Abi) wanted to make sure we all got a photo together!

Would you like space fries with that?

As I mentioned in my last post, I went to Supanova over the weekend and that I'd be blogging about my costumes as soon as it was all over. So here is a look at my costume for Saturday (I only ended up wearing one and not the other as I didn't feel well on the Sunday).

Roswell is one of my all-time favourite TV shows so I decided to do Liz’s Crashdown Cafe uniform - it's actually been on my 'costume ideas' list for quite a while now. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of people who not only recognised my costume but were pretty excited to see it, too! One lady said she hadn’t seen a Roswell reference in years and thanked me. It was pretty neat to be able to connect to people over a favourite TV show, especially one that doesn't get as much love as others that aired at around the same time. My mother and I put quite a bit of work into this costume and I’m really happy with how it turned out (though I'll be looking for a taller bopper headband for next time I wear this).

For anyone who hasn't seen Roswell I've included a shot of Shiri Appleby as Liz Parker in her Crashdown Cafe uniform below (though it doesn't show the apron, unfortunately).

This signed photo of Dean Cain made me feel nostalgic for watching Lois and Clark with my mum when it was on TV. I haven't watched it in years - I wonder how it holds up?

I don't know this girl but she was dressed as Gaz from Invader Zim! My friends and I used to be somewhat obsessed with this show as teenagers and Gaz was always a favourite character of mine.

I think I went a bit overboard with the editing on some of these photos - oops! I didn't realise until after I'd uploaded them all but hopefully they still look OK...I'll try to get the second post done soon. My outfit was more vintage inspired (& therefore more relevant to why I started this blog) than this one.

Ruby Woo Vintage Stall

Sorry for the lack of posting the past few days - I had been getting things ready to sell at the North Adelaide Vintage & Fashion Fair, yesterday. I shared a stall with the gorgeous Ruby (under the name Ruby Woo, hence the title of this post), which I mentioned a few days ago. The day went rather well - I made quite a bit of profit and had a lot of fun, even though it was exhausting. I even managed to take a few photos. First, a couple of outfit shots:

Outfit details: scarf/headband - church op-shop; cardigan - Cotton On; blouse - Cotton On; 1940s repro jeans - Freddies of Pinewood; shoes - Kmart.

For a few weeks I had begun to despair of finding a decent plaid coat for this winter...until I found this one! And I found it at K-Mart, of all places. I would like to have vintage coats but I have found them, thus far, to be too heavy for me, both in terms of weight and warmth - I overheat easily and I like to be able to layer so heavy coats would keep me too warm. 

Enough rambling about coats - how would you like some photos from the fair?

I was very good for most of the day and didn't buy anything...until right near the very end when I bought these...

This darling sweater was at the stall next to ours just calling to me. How could I not get it? And, at 10$, it was a steal. I was thinking of, perhaps, replacing the buttons. The gold ones are nice but maybe something contrasting would be nicer?

And look at the sailor style collar. Isn't it lovely? The lady I bought it from said her grandma knit it but took really good care of everything - it looks practically new. My mum told me it would have been machine knitted. She used to have a knitting machine, too, but it stopped working.

I also bought this set of cards. Now I just have to find an Ethel to my Lucy to play with me! (Or, perhaps, a Lucy to my Ethel? Hmmm.)

On the subject of purchases, here are some shoes I bought the other day:

I've wanted shoes like this for ages...of course, I find them when Summer finally appears to be over! Oh well.

So, yesterday was successful, fun and exhausting.  Now I'm just trying not to spend all the money I made!

P.S. A couple of people asked what it means when I write 'remixed' next to something in an outfit description. On wardrobe_remix most people indicate when they have used a certain item in an outfit before by writing 'remixed' next to it. What it means on my blog is that I was too lazy to edit the description when I copied and pasted it from flickr.

Ruby Woo Vintage at North Adelaide Vintage Fashion Fair

Apologies for posting twice in one day, again, and also apologies to those of you who will not be in Adelaide this coming Sunday as this will be completely irrelevant to you. However, the very lovely Ruby and I will be having a stall at the upcoming North Adelaide Vintage & Fashion Fair on Sunday, the 25th of April, which is also ANZAC day.

A few words on the stall from Ruby herself:

We have a large collection of men's and women's clothing ranging from the 1940s to now. Dresses, pants, jackets, jewellery - good quality pre-loved clothing at a good price. This long weekend is your chance to grab a bargain.

Our stall is bigger and better than before - with guest addition from infamous Adelaide Vintage Blogger Andi B. Goodie - a.k.a. Andi B. Woo!

The fair itself is a fun day for all with great music, hot food and live performances (TBN). Don't miss out - this Sunday 25th, 9 am till 4 pm.

Happy New Year/Decade

I hope everyone had as wonderful a New Year's Eve as I did! I saw the new year/decade in with a bunch of very lovely people at my friends' - Katey and Enken's - Tiki party. The day had been disgustingly hot (41 ºC/105.8 ºF) but, luckily, the cool change came in and the night was beautiful. We had the longest countdown (from over 70 seconds) and could see the fireworks in the city from the backyard. But, most importantly, the company was great.

Dreaming of a White Christmas...

This week's transmission of Silver Screen Sunday is interrupted to bring you a special presentation of last night's White Christmas Swing Ball.

A few weeks ago I showed you a sneak preview of a dress I bought for a very special occasion and, last night, I finally got to wear it. So that means you all get to see it in all of its glory!


Outfit details: hair flower - taken from a bunch of cheap fake flowers; necklace - Diva; 1950s flocked dress - Red Ruby Vintage; corsage - home-made; shoes - Payless.

I really love my dress so so much. It's beautiful and I got a lot of compliments on it, too. And was also asked by a drunk guy, standing with a group of other drunk guys in the street, if I had just got married. How witty of him - his friends thought it was hilarious. I was merely amused at how funny they found it to be but I wasn't bothered.

I curled it a fair bit tighter than I usually do in hopes of getting a shorter, more 1950s, style.

I didn't get any other photos of anyone else at all, except for this one taken of Jacoba (who bought her awesome dress from Midwest Trader) and I before we left. At least it's some proof that I know other people! Enken (who has her own blog, which is pretty darn awesome) took a few photos that have me in them so hopefully I can provide a link to those at some point as proof that I was actually there! Actually, it was the first time Enken and I ever met, which was lovely. We mentioned how it's very strange to know someone online, who lives in the same city, and to not meet them!

Anway, despite the lack of photographic evidence (my camera doesn't work well at all in low light and I'm not fond of on-camera flash) the night was a blast! The hall was decked out with fabulous decorations, there were absolutely outstanding performances by the Swing Sesh student performance team as well as Peaches 'n' Gin Burlesque and the atmosphere was just great in general. I'm so glad I had the courage to start swing dance lessons when I did because I've had such a great time, so far, and look forward to continuing to have many more great times. Hopefully some others will upload photos of last night to various places and I can provide links...until then, you can, at least, see my dress!

Oh, I just remembered that I filmed myself twirling around because, well, it was fun! And I just love watching the way dresses swing out when you twirl around...it's not the most graceful footage of me but it's also the first footage of me on Ye Olde Internets. No talking yet, though!

Wednesday Night Tiki

On Wednesday night I went along to Lucky Seven's Tiki Night at the Adelaide Casino. It was held outside and, unfortunately, it rained but I suppose it was wet like a beach, then! That's some consolation, right? Luckily, there was shelter so I didn't get wet at all.

I'm wearing one of the Tikis I bought a couple of weeks ago and my Mahjong tile bracelet which, of course, isn't on theme but it is the Lucky Seven bracelet so I think it's fitting.

I think there should be more Tiki themed events. Tiki culture is so much fun! For those of you in London, Fleur de Guerre is hosting a Tiki night - I think it is tomorrow night...it would be tonight if it was in Australia but I think the time difference makes it tomorrow for London...too confusing! - which I wish I could attend but it is a little too far to just pop over.

P.S. I seem to have a mild case of blogger's block. I have plenty of ideas but nothing's coming out, at the moment. So, I thought I might take a leaf from Solanah's book and see if any of you have any questions for me until I can get my brain back into gear. Anything at all that you might want to know about me and I'll try my best to answer.

Overture Part Two

Do you remember when I said I had found the perfect dress for my own graduation exhibition opening? Well, I got to wear it on Wednesday as the night in question finally arrived! And here is the dress in all of its glory -

Anyway, the night was quite a success. I managed to sell one of my photos (it was 'S Wonderful, for those of you who are interested) practically immediately! I arrived just as the exhibition was officially meant to open and the first thing I saw was a little red dot next to my work. I'm not sure who bought it, yet, but it's encouraging to know someone else loved my work enough to actually want to own it. Here's hoping I sell the other two pieces.

After the show I headed down to the Casino, again, to see Lucky Seven with a friend from swing dancing but we only stayed long enough for one set, which was better than not seeing them at all. They're having a Tiki themed night in a couple of weeks which I'm rather excited about.

I am currently quite exhausted (I actually had to have a nap when I got home today) but this dress has inspired me to put together a little post about all of my favourite vintage things of the pink persuasion, so keep a look out for that!

A Day at the Roller Derby

As I mentioned on my previous post, I spent yesterday at the roller derby. It was a very long day, but a fun one. The Adelaide girls played against both Sydney and Brisbane - and we won both bouts! Huzzah for Adelaide! There were lots of stylin' ladies (and a few snazzy gentlemen, too) but everyone shall just have to take my word for it as I only snapped photos of myself before I left the house (and I'm not brave enough to ask others if I can take their photo).

I mentioned the other day that I was feeling a little uninspired which seems to happen to quite a few of us and, as one comment mentioned, it’s totally understandable especially when you’re busy with something else like studying. But maybe you could all help me out a little – is there anything you’d like to see more of? Or maybe something you’d like to see that I haven’t done before? Any questions you’d like to ask me, etc.

Incident at Martindale Hall

“ … It was 7.10 am on a grey, bleak morning in Mintaro. The wind was howling outside as Inspector Percival Plodd poked at a few dying embers in the hearth, dreading the necessary sprint to the woodheap to collect some firewood. The Mintaro Police Station was a one person affair, and he cursed not having a Constable to send out for the wood. Suddenly, the mood was broken by the shrill ring of the telephone. “Mintaro Police Station and Holding Cells, Inspector Percival Plodd speaking,” he answered. The operator, Maude Ford sighed. Percy was always so formal, even when he knew it would be her. “An urgent call from the Hall, Percy”, she said. Inspector Plodd stiffened and stood up. The Hall, he thought – must be important. “…an Incident ‘as occurred at Martindale ‘all!”, the voice shouted down the line…”

Earlier this year, my parents and I went for a weekend away to Burra because I had expressed an interest in returning to Martindale Hall which is actually in Mintaro but not very far from Burra. Now, Martindale Hall is a gorgeous old house (or, rather, mansion, I suppose!) of the Georgian era, which was used in Peter Weir’s 1975 film, Picnic at Hanging Rock. It also hosts murder mystery nights and, ever since I found this out, I have wanted to go on one! I think I would spend the entire time imagining I was in an episode of Poirot or Marple and would probably be waiting for one or the other to pop up somewhere.

Unfortunately, not only do I not have 9-11 friends (to make up a group of 10-12 people) at all, let alone that many who would be interested, I recall the cost is rather pricey! Alas. I would also be quite spooked about spending a night in such an old house, especially when it makes me think of Picnic at Hanging Rock, which is one of the eeriest films I have ever seen.

But let us put lack of friends, dinero and courage aside – all of these things can’t stop a girl from dreaming, can they? And they sure can’t stop a girl from thinking about what one might wear on such a trip!

I looked around the internet for a while but I think these two gowns from reVamp vintage would be absolutely perfect! Not, perhaps, the most affordable but this is all pure fantasy, anyway.

What’s your poison? I doubt many would answer ‘strychnine’ when faced with that question but a murderess could easily slip a bottle like this into her purse and dispose of it once the deed is done! And doesn’t ‘strychnine’ have such a lovely sound when you say it out loud? (I would just like to note that I am clearly not advocating anyone going about bumping people off with strychnine).


A detective, of course. I chose Poirot because he's my favourite vintage detective.

If you're in the mood to host your own mystery, there are many companies which make packs, these days - I think the best known is 'How to Host a Murder' by Decipher. A few years ago I hosted 'The Chicago Caper' (you should be able to see a few snaps from the night here - let me know if it's not a public album) and had a blast!

And if even that’s too much for you, but you’re still in the murder mystery mood, brew yourself a pot of tea and curl up with a good whodunnit.
